Finding info on the genetic and non-genetic risk factors of BC and its reduction

♦

Recently, a friend discovered a lump on her left breast and I accompanied her to a sonologist who immediately recommended the procedure called the “frozen biopsy”. Two days ago, another friend of mine underwent a mastectomy of her right breast.

Other than being a woman and growing older, what risk factors can create impact on a woman’s likelihood of developing breast cancer?

So far, even with the accessibility of high technology in the field of medicine, experts are not quite sure what causes breast cancer. It is hard for them to say why one woman or mostly women for that matter ( although I personally knew of a man who is a survivor of breast cancer) develop the disease while others do not. We know of  some risk factors which are the following …

* Getting older –my two friends are both on their 60’s. They say, the older a woman gets, the higher the risk is. This may mean that after menopausal, the risk is greater…
*Genetics- – I really just couldn’t understand why I have read that ” the majority of breast cancers are not hereditary although BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes can be inherited but it does not necessarily mean that two persons shared the genes that make them more vulnerable because breast cancer is a relatively common cancer”…
Breast cancer is a complex disease and there are ways on how we can significantly reduce its occurrence. These may be:
* Having a healthy and well-balanced diet;
* Maintaining a healthy body weight by exercising;
* Limiting  alcohol and cigarette consumption and post menopausal hormone therapy;
*Submitting to breast cancer screening the earliest possible time; and
* For young mothers- breastfeeding can lower the risk.
So fellow moms and grand moms- it pays to be more careful and conscious with our health. Good luck, good health and God bless.
