My unique challenges in teaching Religious Instruction

♦

Being a Religious Instructor of a Grade 8 class (composed of mostly 14 year-old youths) of a public school is never easy. In my case, students were not so willing to pursue this “unforced” subject because for them, it is just a “bunch of fluffs”. During our first meeting, they were inattentive, detached and somewhat “out of control”. They spent countless times on their cell phones- messaging or even calling , even in the presence of an instructor. They seem to find doing such things more meaningful.

Do these students not really care about their faith? Are they really incapable of listening to the Words of God ?

I have always instilled in my mind that what I am doing now- I do it for the Lord. This undertaking is a unique challenge for me.

I am challenged on how to increase the students’ interest, involvement and their love of learning about this subject.

The cooperation of parents or guardians to become the “truly inspiring models” for their children is also very vital. Parents are the main educators of their children for they, more than anybody else, want the best for their children. Also, the “mass media” are very influential in the growth of the young people. May they present  programs which will help give positive influences on the young students on their intellectual, physical, mental and spiritual formation, their holistic formation as a whole person.

So then Lord, just make me an instrument of your peace…  after all, “anything worth having is worth working for”. Please help me God.
