Is Citrus Really Bad for Sorethroat?

♦

citrus-fruitsOf course, I have to get myself some rest. What with spending some days and sleepless nights on a four-tiered  wedding cake, each with 6 inches height, with diameters ranging from 16-inch , 14, 12 and 10… and – working alone! As a result, on the wedding day, I lost all my “powers, strength, stamina, energy and everything” and most of all, my sweet voice! I had a very very sore throat!

Sore throats are caused by the swelling of the pharynx caused by factors like allergies or bacterial infections. It is most likely a sign that the resistance of my throat tissues or my general body immunity are temporarily down due to late night activities resulting to sleep deprivation.

Upon waking up on that day , I gargled a glass of warm saline water with a few drops of vinegar. Then I drank another glass of hot tea with honey and lemon, which I really found very soothing to my throat. That was what I did every time I have sore throat because when I was young, my mother used to tell me to eat citrus fruits such as pomelo, calamansi, santol, orange ,pineapple- any kind of citrus fruits, whenever I have such illness.

Much to my surprise, my doctor advised me otherwise!!! to avoid eating any citrus fruit and even foods prepared in vinegar are bad for sore throats.

Well, well…I’ve just got to believe my doctor , take all my medicines and get enough rest. To eat or not to eat citrus fruits, that is still the question that bothers me. Do you have any opinion about this matter? I hope you will share it here. Hope and pray that I will get well soon….
