Three Tips to Reduce Your Home’s Mold levels to a Minimum

♦

Mold exists naturally, so if you want to eliminate the entire mold from your home, you will be fighting a losing battle. However, it is possible to reduce mold to such a low level that even those who are allergic to mold, can live inside your house comfortably. The following are three steps to take to achieve this.

Use a dehumidifier

These units are designed to reduce moisture in the air as well as filter out bacteria that lead to the growth of mildew and mold. These units are a great line of defense in fighting against the growth of mold in your home, and they are available in a wide range of sizes. You can purchase a unit for a single room such as a bedroom or a room that is more susceptible to mold growth. If your house has a basement, then this is a good place to reduce moisture, as this is the first place you will find dampness in a home.

Daily cleaning

Everyone cleans their home, but to fight against the growth of mold, you need to do this daily, at least in the areas most likely to produce mold and mildew. The most obvious is your home’s bathroom. You need to clean this daily, and pay special attention to where water accumulates the most. This is around the faucets, fixtures, on the edges of the bathtub, the tiling in the shower area and a shower door if you have one. Shower curtains need to be cleaned as well. This should be done every two weeks. This is more often than most people wash them, but if you really want to reduce the presence of mold to a minimum, you need to wash your shower curtains frequently.

Have your home tested for mold

The biggest problem you will have with mold is the mold you cannot see. This is what is growing behind the walls and under the floors. There are, however, mold abatement companies that offer indoor air quality testing near DC. If there is mold in your home, they can find it, and then treat the problem. If the damage is significant, simply treating the mold to get rid of it might only be the first step. You may have to take further action to the walls if growth has risen within them. Tearing them down and remodeling with experts like Dilcon Painting is an effective solution to this problem.

Mold is unhealthy for people to be around, even without any allergies, but if you or a family member has a mold allergy, the problem is magnified. Using the three tips listed above will help reduce the mold in your home to the lowest level possible.
