Most people do not live in their first home forever. There might be an obvious reason that you need to move, a new baby or a work opportunity for example. However, sometimes, you just outgrow your home. It can be difficult to know when it is the right time for a move, especially if you have become attached to your current home. If you think that now could be the right time to sell, here are a few key indicators that it is time to move.
Lack of Space
If your house is starting to feel noticeably small, then perhaps it is time for an upgrade. If you find that you are constantly struggling to find places to put things, it might mean that you have too much clutter, but it could also mean that you have outgrown the space. You do not necessarily need to move straightaway, you could consider extending your current home instead. Nevertheless, this is not always an option. If extending means getting rid of your garden, or you cannot get planning permission, then a move is your best choice.
Alternatively, if you find that you have an excess of space, you might be wasting money on a large house that you simply do not need. If you are planning to start a family in the near future, then keep your extra space. If not, it could be worth downgrading.
Recurring Problems
If you have recurring problems in the house, they can eat up money, and a move might be a better in the long term. Damp or pest control problems can be sorted out by companies like Terminix but if this is happening every few years or so, then consider selling. It might make it a bit more difficult to sell, but some buyers are willing to take on a house if they think they can rectify the problems themselves.
You Don’t Like the Neighborhood
Neighborhoods can change rapidly before your eyes. You might have loved it when you first moved in, but then one day, you look around and realize it is a completely different place. If this is the case, then look around and see if there are other neighborhoods that have the same features that attracted you to that one in the first place.
Can You Afford To Sell?
The housing market is very volatile and you should always consider its current state if you are thinking about selling. If you are on the fence, see what you could get for the house. If you are in a position to make good profit on it, then think about selling. You might find that if you wait too long, the market will turn against you and you will miss the opportunity to make some good money.
Selling a house is quite an expensive process. You will get that money back once the sale has gone through, but you do not know how long that will take. Make sure that you can afford to put your house on the market without putting yourself in financial trouble before you decide to sell.
