Open plan living is ever growing in popularity. Many modern homes have an open plan set-up of some sort, and homeowners often look for such. The appeals are obvious – open plan houses are bright and spacious. The design can make any area look larger than it would otherwise. In addition, no space is taken up with annoying walls! By comparison, old style houses look dark, dingy, and uninviting. The more standard open plan becomes, the more this is the case. Of course, not all of us can afford to up and move into new builds just like that. However, if you find yourself yearning for the open-plan lifestyle, there are a few things you can do to achieve it.
Demolition Derby
The most obvious option is, of course, to knock down walls. The majority of homes have the ability to become open plan with a little demolition. There is no denying that this option will cost, but it is sure to be a lot less than a house move would be. In addition, with open-plan so on trend, this move is sure to add value to your home in the end. Bear in mind that you will need to be careful not to mess with the foundation walls of your home. Call in a professional and see what suggestions they have. Moreover, make sure to let them do the work. You do not want your house falling down on top of you because you got a bit happy with that hammer!
Through the Looking Glass
If knocking down walls seems a little extreme, there are other options available to you. Glass can work wonders in opening up a closed home. It may not create a literal open-plan, but the effect will be the same. Think about installing glass doors, or glass panels. Some people even opt to get glass walls between rooms. Bear in mind that this is not to everyone’s tastes. Make sure to do your research and consider whether you can imagine glass working in your home. Bear in mind, too, that having that amount of glass in your home has risks. Your best bet is to opt for laminated glass. That way, you are less likely to stumble into any shattering situations.
Do Away With Doors
The most basic way to achieve an open-plan feel in your home is to do away with doors in individual rooms. You may not want to do this throughout the house, but taking out choice options is a sure way to open things up. It may be that you want to remove doors from your living room and kitchen only. Even this small step will make a huge difference. If you do not feel brave enough to go all the way, you could install beaded curtains between rooms to act as some divide. It may not seem like it, but even this will open things up and let light into your home. Then, when you feel brave enough, you can do away with these altogether!
