Prioritize These Areas When You Plan a Home Renovation

♦

Renovating a property can take a lot of work. Some people spend years and years fixing up their home, using all their spare time to get everything perfect. While it does not have to take so long to renovate your home, it still requires time and dedication to achieve your dreams. When you’re planning a renovation, knowing what to prioritize can help things to go more smoothly. If you get the most important things taken care of first, you can afford to take a more relaxed approach to the less pressing matters. Before you start planning your renovation, think about whether you need to do any of the following things before you do anything else.

Exterior Improvements

Most people will start with the exterior of their property if they’re planning a renovation. The exterior protects the interior, so it’s important to make sure it’s in good condition. Checking on it and carrying out any renovations is likely to involve looking at the exterior walls, the roof and guttering, and perhaps the foundations of the building too. Weatherproofing the property can prevent a huge number of problems, from damp to pests. You might need to identify any possible vulnerabilities, like holes or air leaks in the roof that could let moisture into the building. There’s also the aesthetics of the property to think about.

New Windows and Doors

You might also consider windows and doors as part of the exterior of a property too, although there are also interior doors to think about. Both windows and doors help to keep a home safe and secure, while also making them look good. If a door is cheap or a window frame is starting to fall apart, it not only leaves the home vulnerable but makes it look unkempt too. Plenty of renovation services specialize in installing new windows and doors, if you would rather replace than give them a makeover. Poplar Home Improvements and similar companies can do anything from bay windows to sash windows. They can be more than just a light source. Make them into a feature for your home.

Lighting, Plumbing, Making Your Home Livable

Having a home that you can actually live in is your priority. So once you’ve made sure the exterior is good to go, fixing up the interior is the next step. The most important things you need for your everyday life include plumbing, electrics, gas and other utilities. These are the kind of things you’re unlikely to fix up yourself, unless you have the necessary experience.

Walls and Floors

If you know you can keep your home warm and well-lit, you might turn to the walls and floors next. Putting down a new floor is something you’re going to want to do before you start decorating. There are many ways to do it, and you might want to include some other features too, like underfloor heating. Walls could need replastering or other touch ups, but you might be going as far as to add or remove one.

It’s important to get your priorities right on a home renovation. Although you might want to start painting, there could be bigger issues to take care of first.
