Many people get incredibly excited about the prospect of decorating their first home. Some even find it to be the thing they are most looking forward to about the move, almost as though a chance to decorate their own home was the entire reason for the move! However, it is best to go into this endeavor with a few tips. After all, there is a lot of room for mistakes when it comes to your first big decoration job.
We are going to share a few tips for decorating your first home. Take them onboard!
Paint is the best place to start
If you are sure that you do not like the color scheme of your new home when it has been stripped of all the previous furniture, then the best place to start is with the paint. Many people are caught up with picking out furniture first and then picking paint that will go with the prominent colors of that furniture, but this can make the whole process a lot more complicated than it needs to be. A fresh coat of paint will make your new home feel immediately personalized and fresher, and it is something that will be a lot easier if you do not have to worry about furniture and boxes either getting in the way or getting paint spilled on them!
Consider secondhand or bespoke furniture
Yes, you may be tempted to pay full price for a piece of furniture that perfectly fits the aesthetic you are looking for. However, you are going to end up paying a lot of money to complete your home, and it is going to take you a lot of time. You need to be willing to look into secondhand furniture that gets you the comfort you need in a short amount of time and for a very good price. Do not assume that all secondhand furniture looks shabby! (Although that is certainly an option if that is the aesthetic you’re going for!) If you do feel you need very specific pieces of furniture, then consider custom furniture. Bespoke may seem like a more expensive option, but you may actually save money due to the lack of storage and transportation costs. It also saves a bunch of time.
Inspiration boards aren’t always that helpful
Many people turn to websites like Pinterest to help them get ideas for home decoration. While this will likely get you a nice gallery of photos of rooms that look spectacular, it may also result in your expectations being a little bit too high, or setting an unrealistic aesthetic goal for yourself. What usually happens is that people end up trying to recreate someone else’s room within their own home. This is a danger regardless of how experienced you are with decoration – you always want to be original and not overly ambitious, after all!
Embrace imperfection
It is best not to go into this expecting your first home to look perfect and exquisite, at least not within the first month. The fact is that something may go wrong, or the best furniture or other items you can find have some sort of problem – if you pursue a flawless home, then you are just going to stress yourself out. You will never really enjoy your home the way you should!
