Making Elderly Care Easy

♦

senior-woman-with-caregiver-in-the-parkWhen you work with elderly individuals, there are a few tips to keep in mind so that you can provide the proper care that they need and that they deserve. Working in an elderly care Norwalk CT facility or providing care at the person’s home often means that you are helping with everything from medications to bathing and making sure the patient is eating. You’ll also be communicating with the family to determine the best ways to care for the patient, often providing even a short form of relief during the day so that family members can care for them themselves.

Try to keep the communication between yourself and your elderly patients as light and simple as possible. They might not be able to hear as well and might not be able to understand many of the medical terms that are used. Look the person in the eyes as much as you can. Many elderly patients only want someone who will talk to them and who will show compassion during their later years of life. Provide as much touch as desired or as needed to show comfort. When you are helping the patient, try to limit the choices that are available so that the person does not have to think as much about making a selection. An example would be asking what the person wants to eat between two different meal options.

Clothing that fits loosely should be used as well as clothing that is easy to get on and off. When putting the clothes on the bed or on a chair, put them out in the order that they will be worn, such as underwear first followed by a shirt and pants. Explore the home to remove any safety concerns that are present, such as rugs that can be tripped over or electrical cords that might be in the way.
