No matter where you are in the world, after Christmas, summer will always be on your mind. Perhaps you’re thinking about booking your summer holiday already, or maybe the hot weather has already set in. One thing is for sure, there will always be a time when you need to keep your home cool. Fortunately, this doesn’t have to cost you a small fortune. Here are some ways you can do it free.
Keep Things Dark
It doesn’t take a genius to figure out that the blaring sun is the reason for the heat in your home. Therefore, it makes sense to block the sun as much as possible. You can keep your windows open to encourage any breeze into the house but keep your blinds shut. If you find your blinds aren’t quite doing the trick, it could be time to invest in blackout curtains. Not only do they make sure the sun stays out in the day, but they also block out the light when you want to get a good night’s rest.
Change Your Bedding
How many times have you woken up during the night in the heat because you’re just too hot to sleep? Sometimes it’s unavoidable on the hottest of days but changing your bedding can make a real difference. Some of us tend to keep the same duvet on the bed all year round. That goes for sheets and pillows too. However, when you have bedding that’s designed specifically for summer it can help you get the rest you need.
Cool Yourself Down
Sometimes it’s easier to focus on your own temperature rather than the one in your house. Of course, you could just invest in air conditioning from an AC company but when you want to save some cash, ice is free. Get plenty of cold drinks in you and avoid wearing layers. Stay indoors during the hottest parts of the day and take cold showers when you feel your temperature rising too high. Avoid hot meals, and indulge in plenty of ice creams and iced lollies.
Invest in Fans
The great thing about a good fan is that they’ll last for years. If you’re dealing with really high temperatures but you don’t want to spend too much, keep your battery or electric fan on overnight. You can get standalone fans that are ideal for bedside tables or ceiling fans that are bliss when you need to sleep well. If the fan just isn’t doing it, try putting a bottle of ice-cold water in front of the fan as it’s blowing. You should get a nice cold breeze coming your way.
Stay Ventilated
Even during the summer heat, it’s nice to have a warm shower or bath. This will create warm condensation and mist in your bathroom that can heat up the whole house. If you’re going to have a warm shower, make sure your bathroom is well ventilated, so the excess moisture can leave the room easily. Otherwise, you risk overheating yourself and getting damp throughout the room.
