Have You Spring-Proofed Your Garden?

♦

The spring has finally arrived, at least according to the calendar. It may still be difficult to believe it in some regions, while others are already warm and covered in blooming flowers. Nevertheless, whatever the weather, there is one thing that everybody prepares for during the season, and this is the great, big spring cleaning.

Time for the spring cleaning

Surprisingly, the spring-cleaning is an old tradition that comes from ancient times, during which each household needed to prepare for the new farming season. As a result, spring-cleaning was a way of preparing the field or the garden for the future harvest and taking care of the cattle. While we have kept the saying, it is now focused on cleaning every room in the house – which you should still do even if it is not spring – and swapping your wardrobe. Spring-cleaning is now synonymous with house maintenance, and as such, it should always include some precious garden maintenance tips too.

Do You Have The Appropriate Garden Tools?

If you have a garden, whether you are a keen gardener or not, you should have a few essential garden tools in your shed. Indeed, keeping your property clean and safe also implies being able to cut dangerous tree branches, remove bad weeds from the garden, and dig and till the soil. As hard to believe as it is, it does not matter whether you want to create an exciting garden or whether you are not interested in gardening. Having a clean and healthy garden is means having a well-maintained property and will make you feel comfortable at home. There is nothing worse than looking out of the window to see a jungle of grass and rain puddles.

Maintaining Your Garden

The basic garden maintenance routine should focus on keeping your grass green and mowed, which can require additional soil nutrients in some cases. Additionally, you should mark the spots where the grass cannot grow or remain brown, as they mark obstacles in the soil such as stones for example. These obstacles can also make it hard for water to be absorbed, which can represent a flooding risk in case of heavy rain. In short, make sure to investigate the areas that have no or little grass. Then keep your trees trimmed to avoid any risk of damaging your roof or your windows. Finally, remove the weeds and any other accumulated litter over the winter, such as dead leaves for example.

Decorate Your Garden

Furnish your garden like any other room.

In the end, your garden is part of your home. You may not want to build a mini Versailles, but there is no reason to keep it untidy and dull. You can find simple landscaping ideas, such as the addition of a flowerbed or a pond, to give a warm and homely feeling to your garden. After all, caring about the place you live in is the best way to feel at home. Thankfully, plenty of easy decorative solutions that can work wonders for your garden without needing more than a couple of hours’ work in a month are available.
